a grandmother’s creations at the miao heritage market in kaili, guizhou, china.

she had no permanent shop and was watching over the stall with her nephew.

i was her first customer of the day. these embroidered patches, with their vivid colors and fine craftsmanship, caught my eye instantly. i bought them right away and asked her to stitch them onto the clothes i was wearing at the time.

as she worked with her needle, she spoke of her son working away from home. they used to talk often, but now, under the pressure of work and his future, his visits and his words have become fewer. she sighed quietly, her hands never stopping as she moved the thread.
